Why Is Reading So Important?

Its simple. Some people have wondered why reading is important. Those are the ones who would rather spend their time doing other things with ones time. Reading is important for a multitude of reasons. Take a look at some of those fundamental reasons that reading is important below. However, it is important to realize that struggling with essential reading skills is not a sign of low intelligence of any kind.

Here is an example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read, is an intelligent man. You will be shocked to know that John graduated from High School as well as College and became a popular High School teacher. And in his later life he became a successful businessman.  All of these accomplishments without being able to Read. There are many highly intelligent people who have struggled with Reading although, when they are properly taught, most people can quickly pick up and learn to Read easily.

3. Reading is important because it develops the mind

The mind is a muscle folks. And It needs exercise just like any other muscle in your body. Therefore, understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its abilities. Above all, teaching young children to read can only help them develop their language and Important communication skills. As a result, It also helps them learn to listen as well. And as a result, Everybody wants to talk, but few can really listen. And so the Lack of listening skills can result in major misunderstandings which can lead to Many things. Good Reading skills are so important, especially in a phonics reading program, reading can improve spelling. As students learn to sound out letters and words, then spelling comes easier to them. Also, Reading helps to expand the vocabulary of any student. And reading new words puts them in their mind for later use in their lives. Therefore, Seeing how words are used in different contexts can give everyone a better understanding of the word usage and definitions than the facts of a dictionary.

9. Have you heard of this old saying

The pen is mightier than the sword. Most of our ideas that are written down have changed the destiny of humanity and nations for better or worse. That means that the flow of ideas cannot be stopped regardless. An now we need to Read and research to build on the good ideas as well as expose the bad ideas before they bring destruction. This can only be realized by Reading in this never-ending, life and death struggle.

10. The Power of the written word

Its a fact that the power of the written word like ideas as communicated through Reading is a foundational reason why some governments oppose free and honest communication. Governments know that Illiterate people are easier to control and manipulate. Its true, people that cant read cannot do their own research and so cant think for themselves. They rely on what they hear and are told. Therefore, there is a good possibility that this is one of the main reasons phonics was removed from most of the schools around 100 years ago.

11. Finally, why is Reading important again?

Reading is important why? Its because words that are spoken and written are the building blocks of life. At this moment, the result of words that you have heard or read are shaping the way you think about life right now. Its a fact that what you become in the future will depend completely on the words you believe about yourself. People, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words. Think about that for a minute.

According to Jonathan Kozol in “Illiterate America,” quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,'” the three main reasons people give for wanting to read are:

1. To Be able to Read the Bible
2. To read books and newspapers
3. To help their children read
